Ranunculus ficaria 'Collarette' is another charming selection of the English lesser celandine. In Ranunculus 'Collarette', the typical, small, heart-shaped, solid green leaves are highlighted with a central silver pattern, which is then overlaid with a prominent black central vein. The small clumps are topped with 3" flower stalks of unique double yellow flowers from mid-February through March (NC). Ranunculus ficaria is a spring ephemeral that is dormant from May through January. The straight species is a very aggressive weed that we would not allow in our garden, but Ranunculus 'Collarette' has behaved well for us since 1999.
