From Hunan and surrounding provinces in southern China, Polygonatum filipes can be found in forests, thickets, and grassy slopes. The knobby rhizomes give rise in spring to strongly arching 2' long stems, clothed with heavily-ribbed, alternately-arranged green leaves. The slender stems rise 1' tall, then angle off at 90 degrees. Hanging below the upper part of the stem is a column of unusual 2-3" long pedicels, each holding two to seven greenish-white flowers in May. In late summer and fall, the flowers are replaced with blue-green berries. This most unusual Solomon's seal is a favorite of ours that has also garnered lots of attention in our trials.
