Fascinating! There is nothing else to say about this bizarre Mexican tuberose species. From a fleshy rootstock, the basal rosette of glossy, linear green leaves emerges in late spring. In late summer (July-October), each rosette produces 3' tall spikes of two-paired, coral-orange, tubular flowers that are hummingbird favorites. Polianthes gemniflora has widely spaced flowers, so plant them en masse to create the best effect. This collection is from the Mexican state of Colima, where it grows in a wetter area and consequently has wider leaves that can reach 1" in width.
