(syn: Podophyllum hexandrum, Sinopodophyllum emodii) This Asian counterpart of our native mayapple is a wonderful addition to the woodland garden. Preferring moist soils, this clumper will burst through the ground in early spring with large maple-like leaves... one per stalk. Above the chocolate-mottled foliage (changes to all green) is a single kleenex-pink flower (1" across). If pollinated, the flower changes into a really cool, thumb-sized, fleshy purple fruit... you will need at least two different plants to have legitimate sexual relations... how can you resist?
