From the Appalachian region, comes a truly exciting plant. This rare drought-tolerant phlox, endemic to the shale woodlands and road banks of West Virginia (and slightly into Virginia), is truly a stunning garden plant. Unfortunately, every plant I've ever purchased or seen labeled as Phlox buckleyi was an imposter. Thanks to plantsman Paul James for sharing a piece of the real species from the shale barrens. The tight clumps of narrow, dark green swordlike leaves are topped in early May with clusters of mauvy lavender flowers held just above the foliage... a great rock garden specimen.
