We discovered this wonderful form of the southeast native (Virginia through Florida) Penstemon australis (australis = south) in a dry sandy field in Washington County in the Florida Panhandle. This form is much more compact and floriferous than normal, making a dense, 1' wide clump of basal foliage, topped with dozens of 15" tall, hairy flower spikes throughout May. The spikes are each laden with dozens of white-lipped, mauve flowers. P. australis needs good drainage and no nearby competition to persist...a superb rock garden candidate.
