Osbeckia stellata var. crinita 'Cangshan' is a 2026 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the little-known, Asian native cousin of the better known genus, Tibouchina. This species has a huge range from alpine regions of southern China to tropical lowlands of Cambodia and Thailand, where it grows in dry, rocky open woodlands. Our offering is from 8,100' elevation in Yunnan's Cangshan Mountains, the highest point in its range. The 2' tall x 2' wide (taller in warmer climates) clump of upright, fuzzy stalks are clothed with 4" long, hairy green leaves, and adorned from August until frost with a terminal spike of insanely fuzzy red-tipped buds that open to 2" rich violet flowers, each highlighted by the drooping yellow anthers. So far, our selection has been fine in the ground to 11 degrees F.
