Forget everything you know about ferns, as this one looks exactly like a four leaf clover instead of a fern. Although it is a southern and southwest US native around ponds and ditches, if I didn't know any better, I'd swear some genetic engineers had been dabbling where they didn't belong. In spring, this tough easy to grow deciduous fern (evergreen from zone 7 south), gives rise to 6" tall fronds that unfurl to a green clover leaf. This gorgeous spreading fern makes a nice mat in moist to rather dry sites... sun or shade!
