This is our 2014 release of late lycoris breeder Sam Caldwell's fertile rose-flowered Lycoris x rosea (Lycoris radiata x Lycoris x sprengeri). For us, Lycoris x rosea 'Caldwell's Rose' flowers in early August with 20" stalks of narrow-petaled cherry-red flowers, each highlighted with a darker central cherry stripe and a lavender blush on the petal tips. Flowering is followed by the emergence of the narrow, strap-like leaves in early September and remain green all winter. When winter temperatures drop below 10 degrees F, the foliage will be burned, so a light mulch would be helpful.
