Lonicera 'Eureka' is a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a fabulous Larry Lowman selection of our little-known North American native honeysuckle. Lonicera dioica is primarily a northeastern US species, that reaches its southern range in Arkansas, where this selection was discovered. Lonicera dioica grows in both rocky soils and swamps, and although it prefers a near neutral pH, this is not a requirement. For those unfamiliar with Lonicera dioica, take Lonicera sempervirens and cross it with a shrub, and you get the idea. Larry's selection has superbly rich orange flowers, which are also quite unusual for Lonicera dioica. For us, Lonicera 'Eureka' starts flowering in mid-April, when it's enjoyed by bumblebees, hummingbirds, and humans. Larry shared this in 2007, and this is the first time we've had enough to share.
