The great lobelia is the little known sibling to the gaudier L. cardinalis. With a similar growth habit, L. siphlitica forms a winter rosettte, which lenghtens upwards in spring, ending in a 30" stalk of lavender blue flowers in August and September. L. siphlitica grows best in moist to damp soils, although it is quite tolerant of short periods of drought.
