Lithops aucampiae is an easy-to-grow, South African succulent that has thrived for years in our crevice garden. Despite repeated claims of no frost tolerance, our plants survived single digits F with no problem. The brown fleshy leaves, which appear to be composed of hard rubber, occur in pairs. As the plant grows, a new leaf pair emerges from the center, causing the old leaves to slough off. In October, the 1" tall, living stones, are topped with 1" wide yellow daisies. Do not overwater them in winter, but also do not to keep them so dry that the roots die, causing the plant to rot at the sound of the word, "water." We have great luck with regular summer irrigation in well drained soils, but much less moisture in winter. Bright, but indirect sun is also ideal.
