xJubautia splendens 'Dick Douglas' is a man-made hybrid of jelly palm, Butia capitata var. odorata, and Chilean wine palm, Jubaea chilensis, that was reportedly first intentionally made by Fred Boutin at California's Huntington Gardens. Our offerings are seedlings from a subsequent cross of Butia capitata var odorata and the hybrid xJubautia splendens 'Dick Douglas' so, in theory, these should be two parts butia and one part jubaea, although genetics are never that precise. These have not been planted out in the garden yet, but we have very high winter hardiness and humidity tolerance hopes for this hybrid. Expect a large feather palm that looks and grows like a butia on steroids. Our quantities are extremely limited.
