Hymenocallis azteciana from West-Central Mexico is one of the most distinctive spider lilies we grow. The wide, glaucous blue-green leaves emerge in mid-June and lay flat on the ground. In mid-July, each 4' tall flower stalk (when mature) is topped by a cluster of 7-9 narrow-petaled, nocturnally-fragrant pure white flowers. We have found Hymenocallis azteciana very tolerant of a wide range of conditions from slightly moist soils to very dry sites. These have thrived in our Zone 7b garden since 2008. Our 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction are seed-grown from a 1998 Yucca Do collection from the state of Jalisco, southwest of Guadalajara (YD77M-44), where it was found growing in shade with begonias at 4,500' elevation.
