This amazing purple-leaf form of the shrubby Hydrangea aspera was discovered in Hubei Province China by Japanese plant explorer, Mikinori Ogisu. This 6' tall x 6' wide shrub is an absolutely amazing plant, that has even thrived in west sun here at JLBG. The terminal stalks of purple-tinted, fuzzy foliage is crowned with pinkish-blue lacecap inflorescences in late summer. The flowers seem to always buzz with pollinators which love the warmth of the sunny location of these hydrangea flowers. You may have encountered this plant incorrectly labeled as ‘Plum Passion’. The original plants were imported from Japan by Ted Stephens and Dan Hinkley. It was renamed ‘Burgandy Bliss’ and when acquired by Monrovia from the JC Raulston Arboretum was renamed Plum Passion. This quagmire should be settled back to the original and correct cultivar ‘Koki’.
