This very rare Korean endemic has the most striking foliage in the genus. I can still remember finding these in the wild and being dazzled by the different leaf patterns...dark purple blotches over olive-green foliage. The foliage will remain evergreen in mild climates and deciduous north of Zone 7. In very early spring, the foliage is topped with small flowers that can range from pink to near white. H. insularis is quite small, so it needs a very special spot in the woodland garden.
