(aka: Gloriosa plantii, Gloriosa superba 'Plantii') Gloriosa simplex is an amazingly showy species of the African native gloriosa lily. The 8' tall, twining deciduous vine is covered from June through summer (NC) with clusters of 3" flowers, each consisting of six red ruffled petals, each highlighted by a dramatic yellow border that ages to cream. There are few plants better to beautify and ugly fence that gloriosa lilies. Like their cousins, colchicums (fall crocus), gloriosas contain the chemical colchicine, so please, no snacking on your plants.
