This selection of the bloody cranesbill was made by UK plantsman, Alan Bloom, and named after the former Wayside Gardens Director of Horticulture, John Elsley. Wayside subsequently introduced the plant as a new "prostate" geranium... I'm not making this up. Either a typo crept into their catalog or this selection is more promiscuous than previously thought. The small, cutleaf foliage serves as a nice background to the brilliant callirhoe-like wine-colored flowers (RHS 74B). Even in the driest of garden conditions, G. 'John Elsley' flowers from early to midsummer.
