The more we explore South African plants, the more great garden subjects we find. From the Cabo Province of South Africa, here's one of those plants that is so ugly that it's actually cute. Picture a severely bloated Venus fly trap and you get the idea. The 2" wide clumps are composed of thick warty grey-green succulent leaves, each of which are lined with soft fleshy teeth. The rosettes are topped with small yellow daisy flowers, starting in fall, stopping for the winter, then resuming in February. We recommend good winter drainage for best results. For us F. tuberculosa has been through 9 degrees in the ground, often flowering as the snow melts.
