Introduced in 1854 and seemingly lost to cultivation is this easy-to-grow and quite hardy selection of fabiana. This bizarre member of the Solanacae family (tomatoes, etc.) grows and looks identical to the northern prized heaths and heathers. In late summer, the plants are tipped with small light purple upright facing cup-like flowers. The 2' wide x 18" tall mound of (I hesitate to call it foliage) is a great textural addition to the garden. Fabiana has proven quite easy in our sandy soils, as it prefers good drainage...perfect for the rock garden. WAY COOL!
