Eucomis humilis is one of several amazing species of pineapple lily from the high elevation Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. Eucomis humilis can be found growing in alpine streams and in subsurface water-fed grasslands. In the garden, however, Eucomis humilis is amazingly drought tolerant. Eucomis humilis has the widest leaves of any of the eucomis species, typically measuring 4" at the widest point. The 15" tall x 18" wide clumps are composed of green leaves, held out and upward, showing off the incredible red-purple patterning of the leaf base. In August, the clumps are topped with 18" tall, thick scapes of small white flowers.
