Eucomis bicolor is a fascinating South African pineapple lily species, which hails from the Drakensberg mountains along the border of KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho, where it is considered threatened in the wild. Fortunately, it is cultivated as an exceptional garden and container plant worldwide. The bulbs erupt in spring forming tight rosettes of large, fleshy green leaves, randomly spotted with dark purple flecks. Starting in summer, the 2' tall, thick, fleshy flower stalks, heavily stained with purple, emerge from the rosette. The stalks are topped with a tufted rosette of bicolor flowers...white, edged with a thin purple border...truly charming and a favorite of pollinators.
