Diplazium hachijoense 'Barbara Joe' is a is 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of another little-known Asian fern (China, Japan, Korea from 1,500'-5,500' elevation), with a unique look that has stood out as distinct and easy-to-grow in our trials. Not only is it distinct in appearance, but it's also distinct genetically being an apogamous (self-gratifying) triploid. Our plants, shared by fern guru, Judith Jones, trace back originally to a Japanese collection by the late fern author Barbara Joe Hoshizaki. The slowly creeping black rhizome produces 2' long, triangular-shaped, deeply cut (pinnatipartite) evergreen fronds. Our seven-year-old clumps are 2' tall x 3' wide.
