If you have had trouble growing delphiniums in hot climates, help is here. Our offerings are grown from seed collected in Waller Co., Texas, by Wade Roitsch of Yucca Do (just outside of Houston). This US native extends from Minnesota to Texas, so these are from the hottest part of its range and are probably the subspecies D. caroliniana ssp. virescens. The green basal rosette leaves resemble a Geranium sanguineum. In early spring, the 2-3' tall single flowering spike rises from the rosette, topped in May with small larkspur-like blue-purple flowers. Okay, it's not showy like the hybrids, so just plant them in drifts of 100 or more. Good drainage is important for best performance. After flowering, it immediately collapses and disappears, only to re-emerge in winter as a rosette.
