This is probably one of the most distinctive and amazing conifers that I have had the pleasure of growing, and we are thrilled to finally be able to make it available. Cryptomeria 'Gracilis' was "rediscovered" by conifer guru Dr. Kim Tripp when she was at the JC Raulston Arboretum. It turns out that Cryptomeria 'Gracilis' is an old cultivar, first imported from Japan to the Netherlands in 1859 by the renown botanist, Phillip von Siebold. The stems resemble small green pencils after being passed through a meat grinder. The tight, compact stems adorn the rigidly upright habit to 15' tall. In our garden, Cryptomeria japonica 'Gracilis' grows about 2' per year.
