We love Carex buchananii...but then, we've always tried to stay far from under the bell curve. Leatherleaf dead sedge is certainly an acquired taste, but one that's a dream for garden designers, since there aren't many brown foliage plants...live ones, anyway. Carex buchananii 'Red Rooster' hails from New Zealand (North and South Islands), where it can be found from sea level to 3,000' elevation, growing on beaches, along river edges, and in moist, open forests. In gardens, Carex buchananii is quite easy to grow in rather dry sites. Carex buchananii 'Red Rooster' forms a tight, 18" tall x 3' wide, upright, evergreen clump of fine-textured bronzy foliage...a perfect blend with blue and gold plants. One great feature of Carex buchananii is you'll never know if you kill it...a perfect plant for brown thumb gardeners.
