This species of wine cups is the Southeastern version (Kansas to Florida) of the more westerly C. involucrata. From a basal rosette in spring, the flat stems spread out to 18" in each direction, where they are topped with bright and truly gaudy 1.5" wide "wine cups". C. papaver tends to hold the flowers a bit higher above the foliage than C. involucrata. C. papaver prefers hot sunny locations and very well drained soils.
