Visitors to the garden have seen these flowering have begged to purchase Bletilla ochracea, so the time has arrived. Similar to the more common Bletilla striata, Bletilla ochracea is also easy to grow, but it requires more sunlight. Even in moist shade in the woodland garden, we just haven't had Bletilla ochracea thrive. In spring, the flowering stalk bearing two long, pleated green leaves emerges from the underground pseudobulb. In early-to-mid May in NC, clumps of Bletilla ochracea are topped with 1" light yellow flowers with a lip that can range from light lavender to dark yellow. A mass of Bletilla ochracea surrounded by ferns is exquisite in the woodland garden.
