(syn: Lunathyrium japonicum) Our selection of this tough, easy-to-grow, deer-resistant, but little-known groundcover black lady fern was brought back by the late Dr. J.C. Raulston from his 1985 Korean expedition. The triangular leaf blade of Athyrium japonicum is held upright to 18", making a dense, slowly spreading deciduous clump. Athyrium japonicum is one of the most satisfactory, easy-to-grow woodland ferns we grow, and one that will perform well even in deep shade. We recommend planting the Japanese black lady fern with the native 'Lady in Red' fern for a truly diverse, P.C. garden.
