(syn: A. nickelii) This easy to grow, but difficult to find, member of the arum family hails from ditches and moist slopes on the island of Crete. A. concinnatum is similar in appearance to A. italicum, but with hastate (like a hasta...not hosta) shaped leaves of medium green. Emerging in fall, the tropical looking leaves remain green all winter. From within the foliage in early spring (April for us), the fleshy colored finger-like spadix emerges from the unfurling, greenish purple spathe. The urine-like odor is prevalent if you're prone to sticking your nose where it doesn't belong, but hey... blame it on the neighbor's dog.
