We love the clumping artemisias, but don't have luck with many in our humid summers. Thanks to this introduction from Quarry Hill Botanic Gardens, we now have another gem in Artemisia capillaris. This native to river banks and seashores in Asia makes a woody Juniper-like dense mat to 3-4' wide, but only 1' in height. The branches are covered with silky silver foliage that just begs to be caressed. In September and October, the clumps are topped with dense flower panicles...not as showy as, say the Baywatch cast, but just as dense. As with most artemisias, a haircut in spring keeps things looking tidy. Good drainage is always a good idea with most artemisias.
