We are excited for 2023 to introduce what we think in the first hybrid amorpha in horticulture. Amorpha 'Half-back' is our hybrid between the Midwest native, dwarf Amorpha canescens and the taller growing East coast native Amorpha fruticosa. Although this natural hybrid was first published in 1953, we aren't aware that it has ever been commercially offered. Since these are seed grown, each plant will be different based on the genetic contribution from each parent. Mature sizes should range from 4' tall to 6' tall with a similar width. The plants are adorned with bottlebrush-like flowers of purple with bright orange stamens, starting for us in late May (NC). The plants are host to a number of bees and skipper caterpillars.
