We are pleased to share Amorpha georgiana, a very rare (G3 rarity rank) southeastern US native subshrub. Georgia leadplant makes an excellent garden specimen, endemic to only to a handful of moist, acidic, sandy, open woodland sites in the Coastal Plain region of NC, SC, and Georgia. Most extinct populations were lost due to habitat conversion to farming, forestry, and fire suppression. In the garden, it has thrived for us in heavily amended sandy loam in full sun, where it forms a 2' tall x 4' wide specimen. The woody branches are clothed with deciduous lacy foliage, and topped, starting for us in late April with terminal flower spikes of purple and gold. Most pollination is taken care of by native bees, wasps, and pearl crescent butterflies.
