Ilex prefers full sun, but will survive nearly as well in part sun. Well-ammended and somewhat acidic soils are best. Although ilex tolerates a wide range of environments and soil types, it prefers not to have wet feet, so well-drained soils are best. Ilex looks its best with regular watering and may get ratty if kept too dry. Ilex that are planted in the correct location should never need pruning.
