More Information About Dioon

The genus Dioon contains around a dozen species of cycads in the Zamiaceae family that are native to Mexico and Central America. The name Dioon comes from the Greek "di" (two) and "oon" (eggs) referring to the paired seeds.

We have found that one species, Dioon edule, has members on the east coast of Mexico that have developed enough cold tolerance to be grown in the Southeast US. Dioon species eventually produce a tall trunk (for a cycad), eventually reaching up to 10' in temperate gardens.

Like all cycads, Dioon is an exotic, flowerless, seed-bearing plant (gymnosperm) that produces seeds within a cone (strobilus). The seeds of Dioon edule are edible, as well as a starch extracted from the stem. Cycads have separate male and female plants and you will not get seeds unless you have one of each.

Dioon edule leaves can grow up to 6'-10' long and are somewhat stiff. Dioon prefers to be grown in part shade with well-drained sandy soils. Although tolerant of drought and low nutrient levels, the slow growth of Dioon can be accelerated with regular water and fertilizer during the growing season.
