More Information About Aspidistra

We have been collecting aspidistra species for many years and now have over 100 different cast iron plant clones, including many species new to science (check out our cast iron plant photo gallery). While we all began with the common Aspidistra elatior, we have made aspidistra collecting one of our many obsessions. We are testing each new selection for ornamental value and winter hardiness while building up inventory, so expect more new, cool, solid green and variegated cast iron plants for sale each season. There are few plants more tolerant of deer and dry shade in the woodland garden than cast iron plant.

Aspidistra plants come by the common name, cast iron plant, honestly as they are extremely durable. Once established, they are extremely tolerant of drought, salt and neglect. In addition to their use in the garden, Aspidistra elatior has long been popular as a container plant (especially the variagated varieties), and the foliage can be cut and used as long-lasting decorations in flower arrangements. A great pastime for truly boring people is to watch for the unusual flowers that appear on the surface of the soil underneath the canopy.

Plant Delights Nursery has one of the best collections of aspidistra for sale in the world, so when you are ready to buy cast iron plants, we'll be glad to help. We occasionally rotate our aspidistra selections, so if you want to buy aspidistra and do not see the one you want, read our monthly email newsletter for updates or check our website periodically.
