More Information About Trithrinax

The genus Trithrinax is a primitive genus of slow-growing South American palms, containing just 5 species that live primarily in dry forests. One species, Trithrinax campestris, lives on mountain slopes in Uruguay and Argentina and is a (rare for this genus ) cold hardy palm tree. It is not the hardiest of the hardy palms for sale, but Trithrinax campestris can be grown in gardens as far north as Zone 8.

Trithrinax is very drought-tolerant but grows best with a good supply of water during summer. However, trithrinax resents winter moisture and should be planted in well-drained soil to protect it from winter rot. Like chamaerops, trithrinax has leaf stalks. The bluish colored trithrinax leaves are quite stiff, consequently in its native Uruguay, people use Trithrinax campestris leaves as a source for fiber which they weave into hats, shoes, and fans. They also ferment the small edible fruits to create an alcoholic beverage called palm wine, or toddy. Bees also produce a tasty honey from Trithrinax campestris. When you're ready to buy trithrinax for your perennial garden, we hope you'll check our our online list of cold hardy trithrinax palms for sale.
