More Information About Allium

While some of our worst weeds are in the genus Allium, so are some great garden plants. The key is to sort through the weedy allium species, which are easy and cheap for disreputable nurseries to reproduce, and find the gems. We have been trialing allium species and hybrids for years. Thanks to the Allium King, Mark McDonough, for allowing us to offer some of his great hybrids.

As a general rule, alliums are easy to grow, deer, insect, and disease free, and very drought tolerant. Allium accept a wide range of garden conditions and can be grown just about anywhere (including coastal climates). Allium flowers (like many other amaryllids) come in charming little clusters of pink, yellow, blue, purple or white and are copiously produced over a long period of time in the summer and attract butterflies.
