We are excited to present another rare treasure (NC Watch List) from our own home state. Plantsman Frank Galloway of NC shared this "new" rain lily from coastal Brunswick Co., NC. In spring, the huge patches explode with masses of 1" white flowers. Experts still disagree on its true identity, but many are leaning toward a disjunct population of Z. simpsonii (the other is in Florida). The tiny, grass-like foliage is topped, from April through June, with a profusion of white flowers. Unlike our other native Z. atamasco, this one grows natively in dry sand and is very easy in both the garden and containers. The in-progress revision of Flora of North Carolina tentatively lists this as Z. species #1.
