Z. jonesii is a naturally occurring hybrid between the night-blooming Z. chlorosolen and, possibly, the day-blooming Habranthus tubispathus var. texensis. The result is an afternoon-blooming fragrant rain lily with glossy green, rounded foliage emerging from a solitary bulb (it rarely offsets). The bulbs are topped with flowers, from midsummer through early fall...the first day, the flowers are dark yellow with a brown-tinged exterior, and the second day, they change to a light creamy yellow. The seed from our plants were collected near Victoria, TX (east coast) after a major flood in the summer of 1998. We risked our lives amongst thousands of giant man-eating mosquitoes to pluck a few seeds from plants in the highway medians!
