We collected spores for this tropical East Indian native on a trip to Bermuda and planted out the resulting plants, expecting them to expire when winter arrived. Instead, they got bigger and better each spring. We prize Thelypteris torresiana for its large size (3' wide x 3' tall) and resemblance to tree ferns, which we specialize in killing. This easy-to-grow deciduous fern makes a stunning addition to the woodland garden. Fern guru Dr. John Mickel says in his book, "It should be used more outdoors in the southern United States..." T. torresiana naturalizes in the Deep South and is not a good choice from Zone 9 south where it can escape into natural areas.
