Imagine a supersized Sabal minor, and you've got Sabal 'Birmingham'...one of the most coveted palms by hardy palm enthusiasts. This massive, but slow-growing palm, is thought to be a rare hybrid between two North American natives, Sabal minor x Sabal palmetto. At fifteen years, it finally starts to develop a short trunk. Our 20 year old specimen has reached 7' tall x 10' wide. The original palm, grown from California-supplied seed, survived for more than 40 years in the private garden of a Mrs. Alexander, before being moved to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Alabama in 1976. All plants are seed-grown from the original, first distributed by Woodlanders Nursery.
