Hymenocallis imperialis is a stunning spider lily species, discovered by the late Thad Howard in the mountains of southeastern Mexico (Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi) and published in 1990. Like Hymenocallis caribaea, Big Fatty is a tight clumper, but with tropical-looking 5" wide, slightly glaucous leaves. For us, the 2' tall spike with large fragrant, nocturnally-opening flowers begin in late June. Everything from seasonally dry to moist soils seems fine.
