Not to be confused with dryopteris, this unusual doryopteris fern hails from Catamaraca Province, just south of Tucuman, where we saw it growing in the shade with Begonia cucullata. Each 10" wide small clump is composed of unusual dark green hand-shaped leaves. It has proven marginally hardy in Zone 7b, but should be perfect for Zone 8 and south. In the north, we have found it to make a wonderful house plant. Recently, our plants have been re-identified as D. palmata, but we await consensus on the true i.d. before changing labels
