(aka: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Habari', 'Chairman') Chamaecyparis 'Chirimen' is one of the most unusual hinoki cypress we grow, and one that consistently elicits raves from visitors....so, we propagated a few to share. Chamaecyparis 'Chirimen' is a "dwarf" conifer with crinkled green foliage adorning the irregular, upright branches, much like the silk crepe fabric used to make Japanese kimonos. First introduced from Japan in the early 1990s, there aren't many mature plants, but our nine year old specimen has reached 6' tall x 3' wide, without any chemical fertilizers. Hmmm...what does that say about the horticultural prowess of the growers whose on-line sites that list growth rates as slow as 1-2" per year? Perhaps they are growing them as bonsai.
