It's hard to adequately describe this astounding sweet shrub hybrid, created by NC State University's Tom Ranney. Calycanthus 'Aphrodite' is a cross between the US West Coast Calycanthus occidentalis and the Chinese Calycanthus chinensis. The result is a gigantic shrub, that could easily double as a small tree. Our 10 year old specimen has reached 15' tall in height with a 25' wide spread. The arching stems are clothed with long green leaves, and adorned, starting for us in early May with masses of 3" wide black red flowers.
