From Kyushu, Japan, comes this evergreen clump-forming species with 4-5" oval leaves. The dark black-green matte finish leaves feature a large silver blotch on each side of a dark central stripe. If you get tired of looking at the foliage, you can crush it for a great sassafras scent. The bizarre white flowers, held just beneath the leaves in spring, look like something our space probe might discover on Mars; instead you can discover one in your woodland garden.
