This former subspecies of the familiar Italian arum begins its growth in early winter a little later than the rest. This later growth, and its two distinct leaf forms (one for winter leaves and another for spring) separate it from the other subspecies. The late spring produced flower is a "hood" of pale greenish-white with purple staining on the margins and mid-vein of the exterior. The same purple is found on the lower interior of the spathe. The spadix (sex organ) is dark yellow to brown. Like all A. italicums, it produces a wonderful stalk of red-orange berries in late summer when the flowers fade. This has now been lumped within a variable Arum italicum.
