Something's afoot here...this plant looks like A. italicum, grows like italicum, and even flowers like italicum...the puzzle piece that doesn't fit is the fact that the tuber shape is all wrong for italicum. What we have here, Dr. Watson, is a natural hybrid of A. italicum and A. apulum. Plants feature purplish red petiole bases, dark green leaves with paler green mottling and margins wild and wavy enough to surf on. Better yet, its big 4" wide yellow-green spathe billows open like a spinnaker sail. Plant a grouping and you'll think you're sailing the Mediterranean high seas without ever leaving the garden. Thanks to aroid expert Peter Boyce of Kew Gardens for identifying this gem.
