We have been thrilled and surprised be able to grow the Asian aroid, Lysichiton camtschatcensis in our hot, humid Eastern United States garden. Despite hailing from Northern Russia and Japan, we've grown and flowered this fascinating aroid in a lightly-shaded, humus rich, soggy site, where it has thrived. For us, the foliage begins to emerge in mid-February, alongside the 1' tall stalks of white spathiphyllum-like flowers. After the flowers fade, the glossy green hosta-like leaves can reach 2-3' tall, forming a large, slowly stoloniferous patch. When the heat of summer arrives, the foliage goes dormant for the remainder of the year.
